James Johansen (he/him)

James Johansen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and an AASECT- Certified Sex Therapist (CST). In 2020, James founded Modern Sex, an organization dedicated to being a resource for LGBTQ+ people. James engages through a trauma-informed approach, shaped by decades of social advocacy and therapeutic work with the LGBTQ+ community. James has worked with a number of evidence-based modalities and practices from a person-centered philosophy that integrates humanistic and existential perspectives.

His work with LGBTQ+ populations has compelled him to examine the impact of religious trauma and other forms of violence aimed at LGBTQ+ people. Further, James works with a great deal of non-religiously identified folks, including atheists and agnostics due to their being underserved and systematically marginalized. James sees religious violence as a critical component to competently addressing LGBTQ+ mental and sexual health due to the long history of bad actors weaponizing faith and the impact this has on our internal sense of safety, self, and how we relate to the world.

In addition to serving the LGBTQ+ community, James is an advocate for all relationship structures that work for people, including those outside mononormativity. James frequently works with polyamorous and non-monogamous identified people.
